Question:
dzadcalls; I did A flag stone rock overlay and the project turned out looking
great. All steps and precautions were taken to proparley prep the surface and
then a base coat was applied. After the base coat was laid we then taped the
flagstone on top, trowled down are surface and pulled the tape. A clear
sealer was then applied and we were finished. Today I noticed that the
rock in a couple of area was coming up. not in little chunks that you
had to break off, but the whole rock. Almost like there was a void
between the base coat and the rock. There was no sealer, soap, or anything
on the base coat? I am truly bewilldered! What do you think caused
this?
Answer:
Tech-101: dzadcalls, Resurfacing a concrete surface has many variables.
Existing cracks should be epoxy injected and then coated with a catalyst such as
a high strength premium water based co-polymer which will reduce
permeability. Before applying a resurfacing admixture be sure to use a water
based co-primer prior to installing the overlay. Prior to installing your overlay
material and catalyst did you wash the existing concrete with a full strength
muriatic acid solution? (necessary for a proper bond with resurfacing primer)
What did you use for a primer?...What did you use as a mortar base?
Also, natural rocks never come washed or cleaned and must be thoroughly
cleaned and soaked prior to installation due to the unclean surfaces inability to
bond with sand and dirt, etc.....Good luck!
